Computer Science
A subject that aims to equip young people with skills in problem-solving, critical thinking and complex analytical skills in a changing world being driven and shaped by technology.
Computer Science is an essential part of a well-rounded education, which will develop innovation, curiosity and creativity. As innovative learners students will try to solve problems by producing professional digital products and learning to write their own programs using text based programming languages. The subject offers opportunities to develop curiosity by exploring learning questions like Why do machines work with binary? How can individuals communicate on the go? As part of creativity, for example learners create various models like that of a network and systems architecture. As part of the subject, learners will also study emerging developments in technology such as Ai and Machine Learning.
Computing is an integral part of the school curriculum enabling students to acquire digital skills for everyday situations and future employment.
In Computer Science, we ensure that our students leave with the skills to fully embrace a future of rapidly advancing computer technology.
Enrichment and extra-curricular opportunities
Lunchtime clubs are run daily in our IT suites, by Computer Science teachers to offer additional opportunities for students to gain support, develop or consolidate their learning.
To promote the development of computational thinking skills, all students studying Computer Science from KS3-5 take part in the Bebras challenges annually.
All students studying GCSE Computer Science will work in developing their programming skills by working with industry experts from Morgan Stanley.
Students are given a range of opportunities to participate in organised competitions and events. Here are a few:
- Bebras UK Challenge
- Year 7&8 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Competition
- Year 9 British Interactive Media Association (BIMA) Day
- Year 9 Idea Award
- Hour of Code
- Year 10 – 13 Raspberry Pi Competition
- Lunchtime Lego Robotics / Coding Club
- Cyber Explorers Challenges
We are proud to be a Samsung Solve Next Gen Ambassador School.
