Choosing your options for Post-16 can be a daunting process, with a wide choice of providers, routes, qualifications and courses, but at CFGS Sixth Form we endeavour to make the process as easy and stress-free as possible for you.
Hopefully, step one has been completed and that you’ve decided CFGS Sixth Form is a place where you want to study. Step two is to decide on what level of course you can study (see Entry Requirements). Step three is, for some, the hardest: subjects.
To help you make this decision, ask yourself the following questions:
- What subjects do you enjoy and why?
- Are the things you enjoy included in the Sixth Form course?
- Do your grades meet the entry requirements?
- Can you make the jump to the next level and succeed?
- What career/job do you want to get into?
- Do you want or need to go to university?
- Are there any specific course or grades you require?
- What's the best choice to keep your options open?
We offer linear A Levels, which means that each of the A Levels runs for two years with exams at the end of Year 13. There are no external exams in year 12, allowing more time to study in depth and achieve higher grades. Most students take 3 subjects, and can combine BTEC Level 3 courses with A Levels.

Level 3 BTEC
Level 3 BTEC courses are equivalent to A Levels and are run over two years. Business and Health and Social Care courses can be taken as an Extended Certificate (worth 1 A Level) or Extended Diploma (worth 3 A Levels). These may be combined with A Level courses if the entry criteria is met, to a total of three courses.
The Applied Science course is only equivalent to 1 A Level and so needs to be taken alongside other A Level or Level 3 BTEC courses.

Level 2 BTEC
Our Level 2 BTEC Award / Extended Certificate courses are 1 year courses and offer a foundation on which to progress on to Level 3 BTEC or enter into Apprenticeships, as well as giving an opportunity to retake your GCSE English and Mathematics if you did not achieve a grade 4.
To boost their GCSE profile to help progress to Level 3, students will take both of the Level 2 BTEC courses offered, as well as GCSE English and / or Maths as required. As students must have 4 subjects on their timetable to be classed as a full-time student, those who only need to sit one GCSE will have periods of supervised study on their timetable.

The blocking pattern which determines the combination of courses which can be taken will be published once we have collated all of the offers made to ensure as many students as possible have their first choice of combination.
Decisions on whether courses will run, and the combinations of courses available will be based on the number of applications we receive for each subject. If one of the courses you apply for is not available we will use the Reserve option you have stated on your application form.
