A Day at Morgan Stanley

By Ms Miah

The Computer Science department took 30 Year 9 students to Morgan Stanley Investment Bank at Canary Wharf. The trip was organised by Morgan Stanley in partnership with Tech She Can, a charity empowering more women to enter the technology sector.

The day consisted of lots of fun and engaging workshops, meeting numerous inspirational individuals from different sectors of technology and having an exclusive tour of the Morgan Stanley office at Bank Street in Canary Wharf. Students were left impressed and some speechless by the huge technology floors with endless numbers of workstations.

Students explored the need for cyber security and the different types of roles in this area. Numerous security challenges were presented to the students which they had to solve using data clues.

Students were captivated by Imagi Charms that they were provided with. The Imagi Charms are small programmable devices that introduce concepts of coding in a fun and interactive way. Students designed and tested different solutions to problems given to them by turning on or off LED lights.

Most students found speaking to real technology experts from different roles eye opening. A big takeaway from this was the students understood that there are many routes into tech, some are traditional like degrees and others aren’t, such as through seeking a new career by retraining and upskilling.

The trip was insightful for many as it gave students the opportunity to explore some of what the technology sector has to offer.

Meet the Computer Science Ambassadors

My passion for technology grew when I realised how fun coding and problem-solving really is. I love the balance of creativity and logic in this field, along with the endless possibilities it offers.                              As an Ambassador of Computer Science, I aim to inspire others, especially young women, to explore this exciting field. I want to show how accessible and impactful technology can be in shaping our future. Outside of tech, I enjoy reading, drawing, and playing sports, which helps me stay creative and focused. In the future, I hope to use my skills to make meaningful contributions to society and inspire others through technology.Caltuma 12CRN
I wanted to be a Computer Science Ambassador as I want to promote Computer Science as a fun and intriguing subject, beyond the stereotype that coding is boring and inaccessible, especially for young women. I also really enjoy Computer Science as it teaches me how such complex technologies can create such helpful and efficient devices that can help everyone in their day-to-day lives. Another aspect that intrigues me is games development, which we explore in our NEA and is particularly appealing to most young people as gaming is a common pastime. I recall my love of Computer Science stemming from a games project on Scratch that I did in Year 8. I wish to spread the sense of joy and accomplishment I felt from working on the project and finally seeing the end result through promoting Computer Science as a subject that can be relevant for everyone. - Inaya 12YJN
I love Computer Science. I love its intricacies and simplicity at the same time, how multiple solutions weave together into one complex system and the relationship between numerical logic and creative freedom. I’ve realised this since I started learning about the subject in primary school, but my passion was reinforced in Year 8 while learning Binary- which remains my favourite unit. Despite being unsure on what career to pursue, I am planning to do STEM subjects, within these subjects feature computing in ‘technology’. I would like to incorporate my computer science skills in my future and open new doors for me. We live in an increasingly modernising world where technical skills will become vital during the many years to come.                                                                                                                           As a Computer Science Ambassador, I strive to encourage others, including you, to enjoy the subject as much as possible. Computer Science consists of many skills and parts, some of which you already like- there's a place for everyone in Computer Science. - Dainne 10T
I chose to study Computer Science, due to the interesting curriculum and also because it will help me in the future by supporting me as the future will require lots of computer knowledge. I enjoyed Computer Science in Year 9, and it is so interesting to learn about all the function of computers and I am learning so much about it. I realised a passion for Computer Science in Year 9 due to the fun task where we made a game online and developed so many skills and I was intrigued about what I learned. As an ambassador, I will inspire others about Computer Science by showing them all the amazing sides to the subject and encouraging them to participate in the learning of Computer Science and catch their eye with the true fun and light of Computer Science. I hope to use my Computer Science knowledge to apply in future careers as the future will require lots of computing knowledge and it will help others by using my skills. - Hafsa 10I
I chose to study Computer Science for GCSE because I like how it is very logical, and everything fits together to create something. My interest in Computer Science started in Year 7 when I created a version of Flappy Bird on Scratch. Seeing something I coded come to life was an amazing experience and I loved the challenge of problem solving and figuring out how to make the game work. However, it was in Year 9 that I actually decided to choose it for GCSE and perhaps pursue it as a career.             Since starting to study Computer Science for GCSE, I realised how interesting it is to learn how different parts of a computer work together and how we can create almost anything through technology.                                                                                                                                                               As a Computer Science ambassador, I hope to inspire others by showing the wonders of technology and how it can be used to solve real life problems. I want people to see that Computer Science is about creativity, problem solving and curiosity. In the future, I think I'd like a job in Computer Science, although I'm not sure which area yet. I'm excited to keep exploring different fields in technology and see where it might take me. - Fayeezah 10T
