CFGS6 Post 18 Days: Creating a long term legacy
At CFGS, we are dedicated to nurturing the future success of our Year 12 students. Through our carefully organised drop-down days, we aim to empower students with the knowledge and skills essential for making informed decisions about their future after school. These sessions are designed to provide invaluable insights into various pathways available beyond their studies, offering guidance on how to prepare effectively for the year ahead and beyond.
We started with an energetic and inspiring session led by Alishia from Fix Up. She started with the big question, "Why?" and encouraged everyone to correct their posture, setting the stage for a journey of personal growth and goal-setting. Alishia motivated students to "chase after that thing they want" and seize the opportunities available to them. She emphasised treating opportunities like a best friend—knowing where they are, what they are, and what is needed to access them. She explained that making meaningful changes often requires shifting perspectives, whether independently or with peers.
Students reflected on their study habits and whether they tend to procrastinate. Alishia introduced three key procrastinator characters, each with distinct traits that many of us recognised in ourselves. It was a thought-provoking session that left us all inspired to rethink our approach to studies and personal development.

We asked our Year 12 student Tayeeba:
It broke down the steps and reasons behind the "why," "how," "what," and "where" to help me understand and reach my aspirations. What motivates me the most is resonating with my personal experiences and the confidence I have built over the years, growing from a person who lost confidence to someone who embraces being herself and using this as a tool for my steps to success.
After hearing the speaker's advice on setting goals and overcoming procrastination, what specific steps or changes are you planning to implement in your own life to achieve your goals?
I will start using the steps recommended by the speaker, which include writing a to-do list, breaking it down by days of the week, allocating time for each task, removing distractions, and highlighting each item. This method will help me achieve my goals by providing a clear and easy-to-follow plan, keeping me organised and on track to reach my desired outcomes.
Students Say:
The session ended with an analogy of an eagle and how they fly above storms, fly solo and how change happens through perseverance over time and a goal.
“the session was really interactive, it woke us up and gave us motivation”
“she made us reflect on our habits”
“it inspired me to think about my goals and made be self reflective and evaluate my choices”
Ambassadors from QMUL focused on ‘How to choose a university’ and the Students different components that students should think of when exploring universities. Whether that’s distance, modules, university life, differences in campuses, types of courses and assessments and entry examinations for specific courses and pathways.
Labiba:
We explored how to write an appealing personal statement by watching a UCAS video that provided useful tips and criteria for crafting an engaging personal statement. The advice included demonstrating your enthusiasm while using plain English to maintain a semi-formal structure. We also compared two personal statements—one good and one bad—and discussed the flaws and strengths in each. One valuable tip was to showcase your personality in an academic manner. The admissions team is interested in teaching someone who can contribute to the subject and bring new ideas, which I found particularly useful.
Students also walked through the completion of the UCAS form and closed misconceptions on the different sections to ensure clarity in the UCAS form and process requirements.
Today's session focused on the UCAS application process and registering to begin our applications. We started by entering our personal details, which has helped me gain more insight into the process and feel less overwhelmed. It also answered some of my questions about the application process. - Wahida
Students also had a session on central Skills, were they were asked to reflect on how they have demonstrated the Central Skills in their KS5 experience so far and provide examples for each one. They were encouraged to link these skills to the skills required in their prospective field of study.
