Debate Mate at Oxford: A Unique Learning Experience

Today, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Christ Church, Oxford at University of Oxford as part of a Debate Mate event. Out of numerous applications, I was fortunate to be selected, and I’m truly grateful for this experience.

The day began with an introduction by a representative from Oxford University, who shared insights about the university’s rich history, the grades required for admission, the wide range of opportunities available, and the exceptional facilities. It was inspiring to learn about what makes Oxford such a prestigious institution.

We then enjoyed lunch in the beautiful dining hall at Christ Church – a stunning space with amazing food! After lunch, we returned to the lecture room for a Q&A session with two second-year university students. They spoke about their courses, accommodations, and the competitiveness of studying at Oxford. I found this part particularly engaging and informative.

Next, we toured the campus, learning about the history, exploring exhibitions, and seeing spaces where students relax and connect. The sense of community and tradition was truly remarkable.

Sixth Form Oxford trip with Debate Mate

Finally, the day culminated in a Debate Mate session. Split into STEM and Humanities groups, I joined the STEM session, where we participated in an interactive debate on the ethical considerations of approving new pharmaceuticals. We tackled topics like cancer cures and the value of certain medicines, working collaboratively with students from other schools. It was an enriching experience that honed my debating and teamwork skills.

A huge thank you to Oxford University and Debate Mate for organizing this unforgettable trip. I came away not only with a deeper understanding of Oxford but also with new skills and connections that I will carry forward.
