Digital Media at London Metropolitan University

The Faculty of Computing and Digital Media at London Metropolitan University invited a group of Year 12 CFGS6 and prospective CFGS6 students to experience the life of an undergraduate student. Accompanied by CFGS’s Head of Media Studies, Mr L. Williams, the nine students visited the Holloway Road campus on 27th June.

Sadiah: Going to London Met was a great experience. The staff were informative and made the workshop entertaining with interactive activities. We worked on podcasts and news reporting/interviews, both on screen and behind the scenes.

Samia: The trip to the university was interesting and enjoyable. I was able to use professional equipment such as the camera and microphone with the dead cat. Also, the food served was amazing!

The girls were addressed by the Head of Faculty, Chris Lane. “There is an increasing demand for employees in the areas of AI and Digital Marketing,” Lane said. “And this is the case in every industry.” Mr Lane mentioned that even fields such as the police, which did not previously rely heavily on technology, are now desperately seeking individuals with these skills, as criminals are using advanced digital skills to commit offences on a global scale.

Our students were captivated by the wide range of equipment on display during their tour of the digitised film, television, and radio studios. They were trained in the basics of operating a radio console and film production equipment. They also enjoyed various production roles such as studio engineer, presenter, talk show host, camera operator, and sound engineer.

One student described the experience as “the best trip” she’s ever been on. This statement partly referred to the delectable and delightful lunch that was served but mostly to the interactive experiences that helped them develop industry-relevant skills. London Met and CFGS6 intend to further develop this relationship, with an invitation to be extended to Computer Science students at CFGS6. CFGS6 thanks the staff and students at London Met who went out of their way to deliver such an invaluable and enjoyable learning experience.

Tasnia: It was one of the best experiences ever! We got to interview people on camera and record our own podcasts. It was genuinely so much fun, and I talked to the people there about doing a degree in media. They are all so passionate about the subject and provided so much insight into it. I would 100% recommend it for other students.

Zafirah: The London Met University trip was very beneficial, not only for my media lessons but also for helping me think about what I want to do as a career. I enjoyed the radio and reporting activities as I got out of my comfort zone and tried something new I never thought I could be capable of. My favourite activity was the reporting and interviewing because I loved learning about how the camera works and what goes on behind the scenes.
