Exams Mastery Session: Starting Year 13 with Revision Strategies
The session offered to us today focused on how to revise effectively, manage time well and avoid distractions while studying. This was particularly helpful for us as Year 13 students, since we will be preparing for our final exams, and learning these strategies early on is essential. The workshop not only explained the theory behind efficient revision but also gave us practical examples and activities to try out, which made the advice much easier to understand and apply.
One of the tasks involved looking at a mind map displayed on the board and memorising key information from it. To help us remember, we were encouraged to use hand gestures and create rhymes with the words. This was a creative and interactive method that showed us how different techniques can aid memory and make revision more engaging. It was a reminder that revision doesn’t have to be repetitive or boring, but can be approached in imaginative ways.

The session also highlighted the importance of minimising distractions, something we all struggle with during revision. We were advised to keep our phones away, or on aeroplane mode, to reduce interruptions from notifications. This not only helps us stay focused on the task at hand but also lowers the temptation to check messages or scroll on social media. By removing these distractions, we can use our study time more productively.

Another valuable part of the session was the emphasis on balance and self-care during revision. We were reminded to take regular breaks between study periods to clear our minds and avoid information overload. Breaks help our brains process and store what we have learnt, which improves recall later. We were also encouraged to create a calm and comfortable study environment, as being relaxed and positive can make a big difference to how well we absorb information.
Overall, I learnt that revision is not just about the number of hours you put in, but about how you use that time. Having a clear strategy, removing distractions, using creative techniques, and looking after your wellbeing all contribute to more effective studying. The session run by Positively You was extremely useful and left me with practical tools and a better mindset to approach my revision in Year 13.
