Tasnin: Attending a Law conference at University of Cambridge

The eagerly awaited residential trip to the University of Cambridge has finally concluded, and I am pleased to say that it was an enlightening experience from which I gained many valuable lessons.

Day 1:

I checked into my assigned college, St Catharine’s College, in the afternoon. We were given time to settle in and meet the students with whom we would be staying for the next four days. Later, we gathered at the Porters Lodge and were taken to the Law Faculty of Cambridge, where the committee welcomed us and provided an overview of the upcoming days. In the afternoon, the committee gave us a tour of the campuses and the city.

Day 2:

The morning was filled with university-style lectures where I learnt about the different types of laws taught at Cambridge. These lectures were hosted by professors of the University of Cambridge, for which I am very thankful, as I was able to broaden my understanding of law. The lectures covered Roman Law, Land Law, Contract Law, International Law, EU Law, and Family Law. In the afternoon, representatives from Hogan Lovells hosted a Q&A session, giving us insight into the application process and steps needed to become a corporate solicitor. After dinner, I attended a quiz night hosted by the committee at St John’s College.

Day 3:

I attended lectures covering the topics of Tort Law, Criminology, and Criminal Law. Later, we were given a legal problem to solve, applying the legal knowledge gained from the lectures. In the afternoon, Clifford Chance provided insight into their application process and programmes available for students. They also hosted a Q&A session with their trainees. After dinner, we went to St John’s College again, this time to work on real university-style problem questions covering Criminal and Tort Law.

Day 4:

In the morning, we attended an admissions talk hosted by the admissions team at Cambridge University. We received a breakdown of the admissions process and requirements needed to get into Cambridge, as well as advice on interview preparation and stress management during exams. The conference ended with a ‘life as a student’ Q&A session with the committee.

Overall, this experience was quite memorable. I met many students from across the country, and aside from the conference, I was able to explore Cambridge itself and appreciate its beauty. I visited animal reserves, museums, castles, and much more. I would definitely recommend aspiring law students to take part in this conference.
