International Women’s Day: A Visit from the Met Police

By Dr Bailey-Morrissey

CFGS welcomed the Met Police to celebrate International Women's Day on 12th March this year.  Students were introduced to the many job roles and careers that women hold at the Met Police and learned about the career journeys and experiences of ten different female officers as part of a carousel of talks.

We were delighted to welcome officers with horses. They talked about the training involved in becoming an officer and why they chose to specialise in working with horses. They provided examples of the types of events they attended with horses with a focus on crowd control and ensuring that visitors to large scale events were kept safe. As officers working horses, the female officers explained their job roles and how they looked after the horses on a daily basis. Overall, they were passionate about their role, working for the Met Police and, above all, providing insights into what it means to them to be an officer and their contribution as females.

In addition to the horses, students listened to female officers from the Territorial Support Group, Transport, the Thames Boat division and officers working with dogs. Their stories provided students with insights into their roles. Students got the opportunity to learn more about the role of the dogs in solving crimes and crime prevention. Moreover, students were invited to handle equipment used by the Territorial Support division including batons, an enforcer (battering ram) and riot shields. They also went inside the armed response vehicle; they had the opportunity to look around and get a sense of how the officers use the vehicle and the equipment in their roles.
