LSBU Nursing and Midwifery Open Day

Our students visit London South Bank University.

CFGS Student Maria Says:

We attended an open day event at London South Bank University for nursing and midwifery. We learned about various roles, including adult nursing, children's nursing, mental health nursing, and midwifery. In the first session on children's nursing, we were split into two groups. One group performed respiratory checks and BPM check ups, while the other participated in a handwashing challenge. We applied a special lotion on our hands, washed it off, and used a machine to check for any missed spots under a light. The second group used a machine to check each other's BPM and examined a simulation doll's pulse and heartbeat.

The second session focused on mental health nursing. We guessed the annual suicide rates in the UK to understand the impact of mental health. We received information about the role's responsibilities and discussed various mental health disorders in groups. In the midwifery session, we checked a newborn baby's heart rate and looked for any bruises or problems. We also had to guess parts of a baby, such as the face, head, or bottom, similar to what midwives do during childbirth. The final session was on adult nursing. Lecturers explained what it's like to work in an adult hospital ward and common emergencies. We practiced CPR on a simulation doll using the 30/2 method, pumping the chest 30 times and then using a mask to deliver two breaths. Overall, the day was informative and provided a hands-on experience in various nursing and midwifery roles.

CFGS6 Student Rani Says:

We attended an open day at London South Bank University for Nursing and Midwifery to explore these career paths. We participated in four 45-minute sessions: children's nursing, adult nursing, mental health nursing, and midwifery.

In the children's nursing session, we learned about proper handwashing techniques, including using a lotion to check for missed spots under a light, and practiced respiratory and BPM check ups using stethoscopes and heart rate monitors on simulation dolls and each other. The mental health nursing session involved a presentation on the role, suicide rates, and the impact of mental health issues. We discussed various mental health conditions in small groups and explored sensory toys used in therapy.

During the midwifery session, we examined newborn health by checking heart rates and looking for any issues. We also experienced wearing a maternity vest to understand the physical demands of pregnancy. In the adult nursing session, we practiced CPR and using a defibrillator on simulation dolls. We learned the importance of chest compressions and proper use of oxygen masks and defibrillators to restore a heartbeat. Overall, the day was informative and hands-on, providing valuable insights into various nursing and midwifery roles.
