My Year 12 Journey at CFGS6: Embracing Opportunities and Aspiring for Success
Hi,
I'm Madiha, a year 12 student at CFGS6.
I study, Biology, Chemistry, Maths an am aspiring to study medicine at a Russell Group university. I joined CFGS6 from Cumberland Community School.
So far, the highlight of my Year 12 experience has been the wide range of opportunities available. I’ve had the chance to join fantastic programmes like The Elephant Group, In2MedSchool, The King's Factor programme, and many more to come. What really stands out at CFGS6 is the incredible support we receive alongside these opportunities. With this guidance, I feel confident in working hard to achieve the best grades and build an outstanding personal statement.
I’m grateful for the recognition of my hard work, both in Year 12 and during secondary school, which has allowed me to excel in my studies. On top of that, we are taught effective revision strategies, which has been invaluable.
I’ve found the sciences, especially biology and chemistry, much more engaging here at sixth form. Although the content is more challenging, we delve deeper into topics, gaining a better understanding. For example, in one of my first biology lessons, we studied the properties of water molecules and their importance, incorporating elements of physics and chemistry, which really shows how all the sciences interconnect.
My teachers have been incredibly supportive, ensuring my attendance is strong, providing personal feedback on my work, and always uploading necessary resources on Microsoft Teams to aid in my revision. In Year 12, I’ve made the most of all the available programmes to support me throughout my two years of sixth form. I’ve stayed organised, kept up with revision, and even secured a volunteering placement at a local hospital with the NHS. Last summer, I completed a four-week research programme at Bromley by Bow Health Centre, where we worked on a campaign to raise awareness about diabetes in young people. We gathered over 100 responses through an online questionnaire, attended events like a social networking event, a summer festival, and visited a care home. From this research, we created a PowerPoint presentation for schools and a magazine for distribution, which I believe will be useful for my future university applications.
My advice to Year 11 students who will be applying to sixth form, is not to stress. GCSEs are serious, so don’t be lazy—dedicate at least one to two hours a day to revision but don’t overwork yourself. The jump from GCSE to A-levels isn’t as daunting as it seems.
